San Pranate Village
Two Lahu brothers, Luka and Samoe, formerly lived at a village in Chiang Dao district, migrated into Chiang Mai city looking for opportunity of having a job better than their former agriculture work in the village. They worked for a basket exporter for a couple of years where they were assigned to treat baskets. They loved the job but they had to quit from the job in 2002 because the employer treated them unfair.
They came to Thai Tribal Crafts for help. Thai Tribal Crafts has five groups of Lahu basket weavers but none of them has the skill of basket treatment. Since the two brothers have experience in basket treatment from their previous work, we gave them the opportunity to try painting the baskets and pay them on pieces they finished the treatment.
Now both of them, plus their family members, are working together. Income from basket treatment helps their living condition improved. They can pay bills for house rent, expenses of their children go to school. They both married and, Luka has 3 children all go to school; Samaoe, the younger brother, has 2 children also in school.
