Story:
Ban Rat Patdee Village
Rat Phatdee is situated on a mountain in Wiang Kaen district of Chiang Rai province about 360 kilometers northeast of Chiang Mai. It is a resettled village of Hmong tribe, who formerly lived in isolated villages on the mountains along the Thai-Laos border. The resettlement village composed of 180 houses with a total population of 600 people. The adults who can speak and understand Thai are less than 60% but children and young people can read and write as they can go to the local government schools for formal education.
Sources of village income represent 60% from agriculture, 30% from sales of crafts and 10 % from other sources. Almost all women are involving making craft items, both traditional and modified designs of embroideries and reversed applique.
Thai Tribal Crafts started to work with Rat Phadee artisans group in 2000. Under the guidance of Thai Tribal Crafts the Hmong artisans in this village are capable of making crafts of export quality. The family income from sales of crafts items to Thai Tribal Crafts is estimated around 20% of total income.
