Mae Gapiang is a Karen village situated on the mountain side in Mae Rim district of Chiang Mai province about 80 kilometers north-west of Chiang Mai. The population of all villages is estimated around 350 and they are all Christian. About 50% are illiterates and 50% can read and write Karen and Thai.
Agriculture is the main source of income to support each family of the village. Raising of domestic animals (chicken, pigs and cattle) is the next important family activity to generate the family income. Traditionally, the Karen women involve tie-dye and designed weaving of their traditional clothing and bags on back-strapped loom for family members. But nowadays they weave and embroider for earning supplementary income.
Thai Tribal Crafts is working with a group of 36 artisans, mostly women. The family income from sales to Thai Tribal Crafts is estimated around 40% of total income.
