Story:
Ban Mae Kon Village
Ban Mae Kon is a Lahu Shi village located in Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai province and it is about 115 kilometer away from Chiang Mai city. The village has 45 households with a population 240 people. TTC started working with basket weaver in this village in 1998 . The items made by this producer group includes traditional Lahu hamper and box style baskets and a variety of modified baskets made of bamboo that they can find locally. The tradition of Lahu Shi making basket is that the husband ans wife working together. There are 36 couples who can weave variety of baskets but the number of producers keep changing depending on the volume of orders available, and currently there are 14 couples working for TTC.
The village can be reached by car in dry seasons and it is difficult to get into the village in rainy season. Each household has a limited size of land that the can grow rice, corn and beans but their earning from agriculture is not enough for all year round. Therefore, villagers need supplementary income. Some of them go to work in different cities in Thailand About 60% of the village income is from agriculture and 40% from sales of baskets to Thai Tribal Crafts.
