Ban Huay Luek Village
Among Hmong population 124,500 who are living in Thailand, Huay Luak village is one of the biggest Hmong village situated in Chiang Dao district of Chiang Mai province about 150 kilometers northeast of Chiang Mai. There are 250 houses in this village and most of them are farmers.
Thai is their second and official language, but only in their own language Hmong is used for their main communication. Although children are going to school, most of them quit at the young age due to financial shortage and unsupportive environment. Many young people are moving to big cities to find a job as cheap labor and solve family living in some way.
Both men and women are trying to support their family by doing agriculture and other plantation whereas only few women are involving in handicraft project.
Thai Tribal Crafts has been working with Huay Luak Hmong artisans group since 2006 and now their creative arts become world standard export quality for the global market. The group is specialized in Hmong Batik pattern and embroidery. Currently their arts are mostly popular and export to Netherlands and US markets. The family income from handicrafts through Thai Tribal Crafts local and international market is estimated around 25% of their total income.
