Mien Vest
Thai Tribal Crafts carries a wide range of traditional clothing, including this vest, handcrafted in the Mien tribal community. Thai Tribal Crafts is a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 with the main goal to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
There are about 40,500 Mien people living in Thailand, in widely scattered villages. They used to cultivate and market the opium, but use today their crafts to support their families. The men are indeed skilled in working with silver and women produce beautiful cross-stitch embroidery.
Mien used to grow their own cotton and spun it into threads. Today the cloth is purchased, and they can therefore use a wider variety of bright colours.
The traditional woman clothing consists of black embroidered pants, a tunic and a turban. There are five standard designs of embroidery, used to decorate the pants, but each woman can use her own patterns to ornament it. The Mien way of doing is original because they work from the back of the cloth and therefore can't see the pattern until it is turned over.
The large number of patterns the women use in their cross-stitch embroidery and their unique form of appliqu? in bright colors are used to embellish many other articles for the handicraft market.
