Karen Skirt
Within the range of handcrafted products offered by Thai Tribal Crafts, you will find many clothing items that reflect their tribal origins in a fusion of traditional patterns and classic styling.
Thai Tribal Crafts is a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 and whose main goal is to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
These jackets have been crafted in the Karen tribal community. The Karen are the largest tribal group living in Thailand. Indeed, Sgaw and Pwo Karen, the two major divisions of the group, number about 321,900 people. Karen men are skilled in making basketry, while women are noted for their weaving made on back-strap looms.
Karen women still spin thread from their own cotton, and use the cloth to produce the traditional clothing, whose predominant colour is red, and other products.
In general, Karen girls wear long white dresses, married women wear sarongs and blouses and men wear long shirts with sarongs or pants. Women's blouses are often decorated with Job's-tear seeds and woven patterns. All these traditional outfits are still worn in the Karen villages.
When you buy this product, 60% of its price goes to the craftsmen. You will enjoy wearing this skirt, and at the same time you will have the satisfaction of knowing that this purchase will help the tribe to raise its standard of living.
