Karen Man Shirt
Thai Tribal Crafts is a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 with the main goal to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
Within our range of Karen handcrafted products, you will find many clothing items that reflect the tribal origins in a fusion of traditional patterns and classic styling.
This shirt has been crafted in the Karen tribal community. The Karen are the largest tribal group living in Thailand. Sgaw and Pwo Karen, the two major divisions of the group, number about 321,900 people. Karen men are skilled in making basketry, while women are noted for their weaving.
Karen women still spin thread from their own cotton, and then weave it on simple back-strap looms. This cloth is then used to produce the traditional clothing and other products.
In general, Karen girls wear long white dresses, married women wear sarongs and blouses and men wear long shirts with sarongs or pants. Women's blouses are often decorated with Job's-tear seeds and woven patterns. All these traditional outfits are still worn in the Karen villages.
When you buy this traditional shirt, 60% of its price goes to the craftsmen. You will enjoy wearing this high-quality shirt, and at the same time you will have the satisfaction of knowing that this purchase will help the tribe to raise its standard of living.
