Karen doll
If you are looking for a gift or a traditional item of Thailand, this doll will be the perfect product! This unique handcrafted doll is a product from the range offered by Thai Tribal Crafts, a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 with the main goal to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
This doll has been crafted in the New Life Center. Thai Tribal Crafts supports the programs of this center, whose goal is to welcome tribal girls and give them education and training. Indeed, the girls go to school where they can learn to read and write their own language, and learn new skills such as weaving, sewing and embroidery.
These dolls are dressed with the traditional Karen outfits. The Karen, also called "Kariang" or "Yang", are the largest tribal group living in Thailand. Sgaw and Pwo Karen, the two major divisions of the group, number about 321,900 people. Karen women are weavers, and men are skilled in making basketry.
Karen still spin thread from their own cotton, and then weave it on simple back-strap looms. In general, Karen girls wear long white dresses, married women wear sarongs and blouses and men wear long shirts with sarongs or pants. Women's blouses are decorated with Job's-tear seeds and woven patterns. The predominant colour for the Karen outfits is red. These traditional clothes are still worn in the villages.
When you buy this handcraft, about 60% of its price goes to the women of the New Life Center. You will appreciate having this doll, and at the same time have the satisfaction of knowing that this purchase will help the women to raise their standards of living.
