If you are looking for a gift or a traditional item of Thailand, this doll will be the perfect product! This unique handcrafted doll is a product from the range offered by Thai Tribal Crafts, a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 with the main goal to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
This doll has been crafted in the New Life Center. Thai Tribal Crafts supports the programs of this center, whose goal is to welcome tribal girls and give them education and training. Indeed, the girls go to school where they can learn to read and write their own language, and learn new skills such as weaving, sewing and embroidery.
These dolls are dressed with the traditional Hmong outfits. Blue Hmong and White Hmong, the two sub-groups of Hmong people, number about 124,500 people living in Thailand.
Homng women are renowned for their needlework and use a wide variety of techniques. Weaving is done on back-strap or foot-treadle looms.
Men wear black pants and a short embroidered jacket. White Hmong women wear jackets decorated with appliqu? and embroidery, and black pants. They wear a white skirt for special occasions.
Blue Hmong women wear embroidered jackets and knee-length skirts with a central batik pattern and borders with cross-stitch embroidery and appliqu?.
Batik, which is only produced by Blue Hmong women, is done by drawing the pattern with beeswax on the cloth, before immersing it in a cold-indigo dye. Then, the cloth is boiled in order to remove the wax.
Hmong people also wear many silver ornaments: silver chains, earrings and bracelets.
When you buy this handcraft, about 60% of its price goes to the women of the New Life Center. You will appreciate having this doll, and at the same time you will have the satisfaction of knowing that this purchase will help the women to raise their standards of living.
