Karen Dome Basket
This basket is a product from the range offered by Thai Tribal Crafts, a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 with the main goal to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
This item has been crafted in the Karen tribal community. The Karen are the largest tribal group in Thailand, with as many as 321,900 people. Karen women are noted for their weaving made on backstrap looms, and the men are skilled in producing basketry. Handicraft production enables them to support their families, and helps to restore and revive their traditional craft work.
This basket has been made with bamboo. Some Karen baskets are used for holding weaving material or for collecting wild honey, but this dome basket is mostly used for storage, particularly for clothes. A Karen man needs two weeks to produce one basket. Before manufactured products become easily available on the nearest markets, Karen people could manage by using this basket for storage. They are still used in the villages.
When you buy this handcraft, 60% of its price goes to the craftsmen. You will enjoy the use of this basket, appreciate its quality and have the satisfaction of knowing that this purchase will help the tribe to raise its standard of living.
