Akha Vest
Thai Tribal Crafts is a self-help marketing agency established in Chiang Mai since 1973 and whose main goal is to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
Our clothing range reflects their tribal origins in a fusion of traditional patterns and classic styling. You will find a wide variety of vests, handcrafted in the Akha tribal community.
This vest has been indeed entirely crafted in one of the Akha villages. The Akha number about 48,500 people living in Thailand, and produce a traditional indigo-dyed cloth.
In order to produce this traditional cloth, Akha people weave the cotton into cloth with a foot-treadle loom. The cloth is then dyed with indigo grown in the gardens. It takes about one month of dipping and drying the cloth daily to produce the typical colour.
This cloth is embellished with silver ornaments, coins, beads, red-dyed feather tassels, seeds and also a bright-coloured appliqu?.
Most Akha people wear the traditional outfit, consisting for the women of a headdress, a jacket worn over a halter-like garment, a short skirt, a sash and leggings. But Christian Akha people tend to change and now dress more like Thai people.
When you buy this handcraft, 60% of its price goes to the craftsmen. As a customer of Thai Tribal Crafts, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that this purchase will help the Akha tribe to raise its standard of living. And of course, you will enjoy wearing this vest!
