| Akha dollIf you are looking for a gift or a traditional item of Thailand, this doll will be the perfect product! This unique handcrafted doll is a product from the range offered by Thai Tribal Crafts, a self-help marketing agency established in 1973 with the main goal to provide opportunities for improving the quality of life of the tribal people in Northern Thailand.
This doll has been crafted in the New Life Center. Thai Tribal Crafts supports the programs of this center, whose goal is to welcome tribal girls and give them education and training. Indeed, the girls go to school where they can learn to read and write their own language, and learn new skills such as weaving, sewing and embroidery.
These dolls are dressed with the traditional Akha outfit. The Akha number about 48,500 people living in Thailand. Most Akha people wear the traditional outfit, consisting for the women of a headdress, a jacket worn over a halter-like garment, a short skirt, a sash and leggings.
In order to produce their indigo-dyed cloth, Akha people used to grew their own cotton, but now they purchase it at the market. Then, they can spin the cottons in threads, and weave it into cloth with a foot-treadle loom. The cloth is finally dyed with indigo grown in the gardens. This cloth is embellished with silver ornaments, coins, beads, red-dyed feather tassels, seeds and many other items. They also do a bright-coloured appliqu?.
When you buy this handcraft, about 60% of its price goes to the women of the New Life Center. You will appreciate having this doll, and at the same time have the satisfaction of knowing that this purchase will help the women to raise their standards of living.
